Ornamental bettas are selectively bred forms of Betta species, primarily developed for appearance, with exaggerated finnage, intense coloration, and a wide range of patterns. They are typically derived from domesticated lines and are widely kept in aquaria due to their visual appeal and adaptability. Like all bettas, they possess a labyrinth organ for breathing atmospheric air and prefer warm, calm water with access to the surface. Behaviour is often territorial, especially among males, and while hardy compared to many wild forms, ornamental bettas may be more sensitive to poor water quality due to intensive breeding.
